about
www.middlemaki.com

They term their music “present tense Americana;” songs that are both nostalgic and immediate. “The emotions and the stories are the same as they ever were,” describes songwriter Elizabeth, “and when you take them out of their context, when you reposition them, they mean something both old and wholly new. We want to tell our new stories by the light of the old.”

The band, often compared to Iron and Wine, Gillian Welch, and Lucinda Williams, writes music from the Americana genre, but isn’t married to it. The current generation has the luck of getting to reinvent Americana in the wake of all the amazing music born since the mid 1900s. Middle Maki clearly defines this new generation where the sincerity of Americana isn’t about geography or genetics anymore, its about making the music you love. They say to you: “We are making the music we love; come out and make it with us.”

Track Name: Month of Sundays
There's a little red train
That runs down the tracks
And birds on the wire
That scare real fast

But she's no raven
No she's no crow
Though she shines in the sun
And she's gone as she comes, gone as she comes

[slow motion yodeling]
She was born in the belly of the swamp
It's unsteady ground, unsteady ground
And she can't seem to keep
From travelin' around, travelin' around
she's been gone a month of Sundays
From here to there, here to there
And each time she comes home
She worse for the wear, worse for the wear
[slow motion yodeling]

Look to the east
She looks to the west
Search this world over
I still love her the best

And when we were young
I made her a slingshot
I made it hard and fast
From oak to last, oak to last

And when we are grown
She'll come back for good
And I'll build her a cabin
Way up in the woods, high in the woods

chorus

Rhubarb pie in the summer
Pumpkin soup in the fall
For her I'd swim a river
In the dead of winter, wearin' nothin' at all

And there ain't no man
Cross the whole of the country
Who can hold her hunger
In the palm of his hand, palm of his hand

But I know better
Than to try and pretend
I just send her letters
To bring her home again, home again

chorus
Track Name: Cocaine
cocaine
cocaine
killed my baby but it won't kill me
buried her beneath those lonesome plains
buried her beneath that lone prairie

we were married when we were young
preacher sung us good psalms
every morning I'd work on the farm
she'd get to nothing but trouble and harm

chorus

built our home with my own hands
a man's work, muscle on bone
my wife left our house threadbare
never had bread and we never had milk

chorus

very last time I saw my girl
she was riding out to the store
on that bicycle I bought her
some were born to leave this world

chorus
Track Name: Port Adieu
we make bets
about how far out it will get
then we pushed our couch
off of the pier
ooo ooo, we're taking pains to hide
what we hold dear

we rolled our piano
on the pond the ice hummed along
we hid maps behind wallpaper
ooo ooo, we are kids, we are grown
we're alone

port adieu, I have been good to you
port adieu, I have been good to you

we leave our red boat
excavated and bared in a tree
our rabbit ear tv in a chimey
ooo ooo, we are trying to break
bad habits

and as we drive from home
the dark towns grow
Brother John, can't you hear
ooo ooo, morning bells can't you tell
how we learn

chorus

chorus
Track Name: Through the Rye
greyboard house
on the outside of town
china would rattle
when a train came down

bad side of the levy
don't count for nothing
when the flood waters
are arising

and if a body meet a body
coming through the rye
if a body meet a body, baby don't you cry
if a body meet a body, coming through the rye
well you know, babe, we're bound to die

sandbag the shore
against the weight of the water
nothing gonna float
but what's made of wood

inspite of all the fine things
a body can own
there's gotta be good
in living alone

chorus

i'll open your door
in my morning gown
to meet that river
at your stoop

one for coop,
two wading shoes
three to fly
and you know i'm gone

a one, a two, a three i'm gone
i said a one a two a three i'm gone
a one, a two, a three i'm gone
with my good book full
of troubling songs

wake up my good man turn your lamp down low
i said wake up my good man turn your lamp down low
wake up my good man turn your lamp down low
cause I got something to tell you fore I go

chorus
Track Name: Oceanliner
I packed my valise
all the way to the top
with one million dollars
handmade hand cut
it's vegas, then paris, then venice, italy
i'm going now love, won't you come with me

ooo lee, ooo lie
ooo lee, i'm taking my time
ooo lee, ooe lie
ooo lee, living this life a lie

the bathtub in the backyard
is my oceanliner
the static tv
is a tinfoil sea
and salvaged china makes junkyard tea
a shipwrecked girl is a sight to see

chorus

I pawnshopped your letters
and rolled them cigarettes
and wild or tame
I will be well kept
I waited the summer, I waited in vain
and if it's not in love, then it's in its name

chorus
